Mignolo 70: “La americanidad y la colonialidad estuvieron íntimamente ligadas desde un principio. La singularidad de América reside en los diversos borramientos que acompañaron la expansión colonial europea: el imaginario territorial indígena. . . .”

This also uses the word singularity, so one could consider it in relation to the question of cultural exceptionalism. First, though, I am interested in it for María and other texts like it which are fundamentally about those erasures.

There is also the Mignolo point that part of what America caused to come into existence was a large state apparatus to administer the Other (the colony). This is one way in which state and race are born together and go together.
