School

…it is going to start and we will meet many more students resembling our former students, people who may or may not use their degrees directly in their future jobs but who will:

♦ discover they can work white collar

♦ discover that they enjoy the humanities

♦ learn that if they go down to a gallery, they will be allowed in

♦ grow interested in topics like indigenous struggles

♦ see their first non-commercial film, and learn how to find art houses

…and other things like that. Then they will graduate and have jobs in Houston and Austin and San Francisco and write post cards saying, I could not have done this without you! And I will say how so, I did not help you apply for that job or even serve as as a reference…

And they will say: you did not criticize my plan to move, you reacted as though it were reasonable and possible. That is what you did, and it meant a lot. And I do not present myself as a teaching enthusiast, but I do set a lot of people up for life like that. So I guess it is true, I show people who want to be like me, or who are secretly already like me, how to do it.

Axé.
