Bar Zero

I have referred to parish prison as Abu Ghraib, but really we do not have those conditions. From the windows we can wave to festival revelers. The prettiest women have the most confidence of anyone, and they wave right back. I was even let out to go down the street to my ceramics studio. I was allowed to look directly at a computer, wherein I discovered a Mexican blog called Hazme el chingado favor.

DRINK

We have no wine. My creativity, however, has produced a new drink. I expected it to be merely tolerable, but it is actually quite good.

You must pick ripe grapefruit from the tree in the yard, pull mint leaves from the edges of the chain link fence, and steal lime Perrier and Bombay Sapphire gin from the Director while he sleeps.

Mix equal parts of fresh ripe grapefruit juice and lime Perrier. Put in a splash of Bombay Sapphire gin. Serve with mint leaves and ice.

FOOD

We have no meat. However I sautéed onions and garlic in olive oil, and then steamed eggplant, cauliflower, peas, potatoes and tomatoes in that with some chicken broth and a great deal of general curry powder, some red pepper and some garam masala. I ate it with Bulgarian yogurt and it was very good.

LOCATION

Now, it is time to speak of a drink I do not like in a picture I do like:

reconquista vodka

  1. I came up with another one (non-alcoholic): ripe cantaloupe in the blender with turbinado sugar and milk. (You need the milk to be cold. You can put in ice but that doesn’t cool it down evenly enough.)

This can also be made with water – it is how I usually do it – but the effect is really different. Watermelon is good with water, too, and the pale yellow-green melons like honeydew and Juan Canary are the very best for this.

  2. Also: I am not a dessert person but at the ceramics studio, which was having a party, they had these light little cream puffs, delicious, and this organic chocolate with 70% cacao. It was all excellent.
