Given that this is the situation, should I our should I not bother to put more time into AAUP and, or and/or, committee work for Academic Senate? AAUP is in my opinion permanently valuable, but for various reasons the charge the Academic Senate would like to give me is more attractive to me personally. Yet I am not sure I should accept.

I do not mind not getting credit, or even being seen as a crank for caring about the work in question. What I would mind would be to do something which might in fact be utterly useless and irrelevant. I may have a blind spot as regards these matters. But no: the benefits would be personal, insofar as I might interact with normal people who were also professors.
