Dr. Michael White

It is the weekend, so we will sing. WWOZ, that is, W-Wizard of Oz, plays a lot of traditional jazz in the morning and I have discovered that this is the very best music for grading.

One moves along in regal manner, striding right down the hill toward graduation. I think of the St. Augustine High School band at the night parades during Carnaval, marching down St. Charles Avenue behind the horses and the torch bearers, swinging their batons.

Our own band knows how to play such music. If they played it at the actual graduation ceremony, I would swing and smile.

In any case, here is New Orleans’ own Dr. Michael White on the Whoppin’ Blues, in The Hague.

Dr. Michael White now holds an endowed chair in music. When I first heard him, though, I was told he was a professor of Spanish.

Axé.
