I am now running Ubuntu Linux 11.04 on some higher end hardware and it is amazingly stable. Endless security patches and proprietary software of all kinds are receding quickly in my rear view mirror.

It is so great to have a fully functioning computer, that I know in terms of hardware will last, that I can afford to really commit to and get comfortable on. Aaaaahhhh…
Very nice. Have you tried typing up a document? How did that go?
Not in Lyx or anything new, just in LibreOffice or OfficeLibre or whatever it is Open Office has changed its name to! That is as in Windows but doesn’t seem to flicker around as much. I’m still looking for the right word processor, i.e. one I really like.
Oh yes: thanks for telling me not to get a 17″ screen. This is 15.6″ and it is large enough. And already too large for my lap, really, so I’m glad I didn’t go larger.
I recently got a 14” laptop – from the same deal site I linked you to – and I’m already regretting it. My next laptop will be super portable and light. Stuff like a DVD drive just adds unnecessary weight. I’d rather get one without it and just buy a external USB DVD drive to hook up to my laptop if I need to watch something. Rest of the time the DVD drive stays at home.
That’ll easily knock off more than a pound, which doesn’t sound like much, but I walk around with my laptop a fair bit and after a while you really begin to feel the weight.
Yes, I got a cheap 14″ Windows laptop in December and regretted it then. This thing I have now is along the lines of a mobile workstation, which is what I wanted, but I couldn’t lug it around a UC campus for any length of time, I’d lose patience — I’ve never seen a battery this size before, either. Shocking. I got it all from one Rajeesh and a guy whose Chinese name I never could understand and who said we’d communicate better in writing which was true. They live in Sunnyvale. I could be tempted by the Mac Airbook for walking UC campus kinds of purposes although I haven’t looked to see what it really is — it just looks really neat at Best Buy. 😉
Ok, looking forward to have it. Let’s see how this marvelous new linus 11.04 works out.
@Stringer, that is so true!
@Adriana, as a machine it’s brilliant. I am only worried about word processing and the ubiquity of MS Word. The word processor I like is Word Perfect and there isn’t a current version for Linux (so Linux versions don’t have compatbility with current versions of Word, and also the old WP isn’t built for current OS’s and machines. If I find a word processor I really like then I’ll be happy, happy.
