Frederick Douglass

Every once in a while I spy on my grandfather’s family. They were the lords of Wye House in Easton, Maryland, est. 1659. This was where Frederick Douglass grew up, back when he was just Fred Baily. He describes my ancestors in his Narrative. Wye House was known for its hospitality, having housed among many others the Cadjiens while they were still somewhat stateless. Hospitality is comparatively easy to offer if you have 1,000 slaves, as my ancestors had.

I am spying on them because of the Lincoln film. It seems that a statue to Douglass has been put up in Easton. More exciting is that African religious objects are built into some of the greenhouse walls. I really ought to go there, it would be research.

Axé.
