Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23. Managed to buy the book. FELT avoidant and lazy, felled by the heat and other things. Actually did get some Stuff done, in terms of practical life. I will allow one more day of avoiding service tasks I do not want to face, and that’s it, because I don’t like avoiding them, either. Also, I’m trying to face the fact that I have no colleagues.
Friday, July 21. Got to Tulane, read part of the designated book, got ideas from it, decided yes I need it, realized I can in fact buy it reasonably. Found out how much bibliography there is on this author.
Wednesday, July 19 and Thursday, July 20. I struggled with the abstract. Ultimately I decided I was writing a new one and I will save it for the next event, and today I submitted the one I had written Monday. Also Wednesday I spent many hours trying to complete the book order–very difficult dealing with foreign bank accounts and so on. I finally succeeded today. I’m going to New Orleans for the night, to study at Tulane.
Tuesday, July 18. I am revamping the abstract. I’m glad–I don’t think this is procrastination, I think it is writing. I also remembered about the MLA in New Orleans, 2025. It may be time to do something about that soon.
Also, here is Tulane’s library guide to Spanish-speaking newspapers in New Orleans. I do not see El Independiente, where I thought Villaverde wrote–where it is said he did and that I believe I have seen scanned. I should go to the HNOC/other archives on that. There is this discussion of it.
I skimmed and scanned a 2019 article by Joseba Gabilondo, “The Atlantic State of Violence: State of Exception, Colonial/Civil Wars, and Concentration Camps.” Some of his points on 19C Spain, I had intuited just from teaching preparation, and I’m gratified, but I need to come back to this for more serious reasons including critiques of Mignolo and decoloniality, and the discussion of Guha.
There is also this Lorca production, and more things like it, at Granada and I should look into it all more seriously.
Monday, July 17. I wrote the abstract and messaged with the store on Guzmán’s book. Finishing and sending these two things are tomorrow.
Sunday, July 16. Ruffinelli’s book on Guzmán is at Tulane, and I will go there and read it. More than once. Read it there and photocopy parts of it, that is, scan them.
I also started working on the abstract for C19, and started buying Guzmán’s new book. I have decided to work on the March conference abstracts and the Guzmán course. Once the abstracts are finished I will see what research thing is next.
I have a lot of other teaching and service things to do, and practical things to do, but centering the Guzmán course and taking the research things in order (as opposed to just hiding by continuing with the article right now) is going to anchor me, I have decided.
I’m going to the gym, it’s important.
Axé.
