I am shedding old paper issues of Critical Inquiry that contain articles from which I could surely learn.
Benedict Anderson talks about nationalism as being born from exile. In the colonies there are non-English, English-identifying people and non-Spanish Spaniards. And “home” is always mediated, and remember, empires were polyglottal; nations were supposed to resolve hybridity.
There is a lot to say. Famous articles by people like Arif Dirlik from thirty years ago, that technically one should have copies of and that I think having the paper journal will help me remember to re-study, although this is not true. Hélène Cixous, “Who are we? Are we free?” And I have these things, but there are many more things and they are merely the ones I happen to have, and I am letting them go.
I would have liked to be studying harder these last years, that is to say, studying these things, but one can only look ahead. There was Yurkievich on La expresión americana, there was Sanjinés’ Mestizaje upside down, and one can only look ahead.
Meditation is helping me get calm enough to study and so will yoga.
