Picky

I have just finished a list of works cited. It was the pickiest such job I ever undertook, because I had never written anything that cited so many very old books. Getting the editions straight, and discovering the conventions for citing these particular people, seems to have taken as long as writing the article in the first place.

I always find MLA style very cumbersome for citing old texts. I sometimes wonder whether this is just my ineptitude, or whether it is a quasi-religious difference, like the battle between PC and MacIntosh users.

I like the Chicago Manual of Style, DOS, and UNIX, and I would like LINUX if I had a word processor for it that I liked. Others appear to prefer MLA style, Windows, and MacIntosh. “It is easier, it is streamlined,” say one and all. So streamlined, I think, that there are many things they do not cover without great contrivance.

Axé.

  1. I like MLA the best because I know MLA. One time we were obligated to use the Chicago and I kept feeling like I was forgetting something. I find that if you make the citing the second you use it in your paper it is easier than going back later, or when you are done to compile the work cited list.

Sorry I have not commented more, I have been in a strange place.

  2. CM – Strange place, I am also in one. Trying to be academic and b.o.r.e.d. Desperate for an intellectual and creative life, as opposed to an academic one.

Notation style: I converted from Chicago to MLA, thence the struggle. Going back like that is horrible.

Here is another technical tidbit, in case anyone does not know: to remove the “author” field (in the code) of a MS Word document, so that you make sure your manuscript really is anonymous, bring down the “file” menu. Click on “properties” and select “summary.” Then remove the identifying features.

Joanna – Merci. It was one of the most exhilarating writing experiences I have ever had, and the most depressing experience of revision. I am hoping that shows that I knew less when I started than I do now.
