I showed the film Juchitán Queer Paradise today and, as it turned out, shocked the audience. It seems that although they know gay people and some are gay themselves, this was the first time they saw people talking about it openly.
The film is lively and fascinating. I liked it especially because it is so very Mexican, and because it lets you see and hear people speaking Zapotec. I want to spend some time in Juchitán de Zaragoza for the sake of the embroidered dresses, the unassuming horse-drawn carts, and the flowery headdresses which so attracted Frida Kahlo.
Axé.
sounds muy interesante. (these fellas named “Che”! you’ve got to watch ’em.)
Hi Nez – the town has *got* to be fascinating. I am tempted to say, let’s meet there this summer! Film is too, although I would rather have discussed it with a less shocked audience. A lot of the views of homosexuality in the film are actually quite traditionalist, and it centers mostly on men, and/so it would have been truly fun to talk about with a large, diversely gay, Mexican and international audience.
