It is the weekend, so we will sing. Now Erkin Abdulla is singing in Uighur. There is a solo on his website. Besides being an international-style pop singer from East Turkistan, Abdulla is an associate director of the Chinese Flamenco Association. Here, for instance, he sings in Chinese, with Flamenco rhythms and dancers, about Ali Baba.
His Orda Henim is the most interesting pop video I have seen in some time due to its mestizaje of cultural signs. It is framed by shots of Enim looking very tejano or norteño in a cowboy hat, walking with his guitar across what, because of the hat and the guitar, appears to be a desert in the Far West. In this desert he plays flamenco by a campfire. Inside the frame, however, he sings with traditional Uighur musicians, his Turkic rock band, and touches of muzzein.
