This is what Ernesto Cardenal said in El Nuevo Diario (Managua), August 31, 2001, on abstention from voting. It was republished in La Insignia (Madrid) two days later, and that is where I have found it now.
Motivated by the declarations Sergio Ramírez has just given, that he neither shared nor supported the electoral pact between the FSLN and the MRS, I too wish to publicly express my disagreement with that alliance, and at the same time to make public my resignation from the MRS party, of which I was one of the founders as well as an honorary member of its executive council.
I maintain the admiration and warmth I have always felt for Commandant Dora María Téllez, and I respect her current political choice, as I do that of the other comrades from the MRS who have made the same decision. I know they have done so in good conscience, convinced that Daniel Ortega is the lesser of two evils. Although for me he is not lesser, nor is Bolaños. In my view they are simply two different evils. We have on one hand authentic capitalism, and on the other a false revolution.
My position is one I am sure is shared by a great part of the population: abstention. In present day Nicaragua we are in the same situation as were were under Somoza, when Pedro Joaquín Chamorro made this slogan famous: There is no one to vote for. And like many others, he maintained the dignified position of never voting under that regime. Because at that time one could only vote for somociso or the rule of gnats.
The bishops of Nicaragua are wrong when they say it is each citizen’s moral obligation to vote in these elections – which are not democratic elections, but elections imposed by a pact. What kind of aberration is this, that we should be obliged to vote for candates we do not want, because the people have not had the freedom to elect candidates?
Con motivo de las declaraciones que acaba de dar Sergio Ramírez, diciendo que no compartía ni respaldaba el acuerdo electoral suscrito entre el FSLN y el MRS, yo también deseo expresar públicamente el desacuerdo con esa alianza, y por lo mismo hacer pública mi renuncia al Partido MRS del que fui uno de los fundadores y un miembro honorario de su Junta Directiva.
Mantengo el aprecio y admiración que he tenido siempre por la Comandante Dora María Téllez, y respeto su actual opción política, como también las de los otros compañeros del MRS que la han tomado. Sé que lo han hecho en buena conciencia, convencidos de que Daniel Ortega es un mal menor. Aunque para mí no es menor, como tampoco lo es Bolaños. Considero que ninguno de estos dos males es menor que el otro. Simplemente son dos males diferentes. Tenemos por una parte el capitalismo auténtico, y por la otra una falsa revolución.
Mi posición es la que estoy seguro que está teniendo una gran parte de la población: la de la abstención. En la Nicaragua actual estamos igual que como estuvimos durante el somocismo, cuando Pedro Joaquín Chamorro popularizó aquel famoso lema: No hay por quién votar.Y él mantuvo la posición digna de no votar nunca bajo aquel régimen (como muchísimos otros tampoco lo hicimos). Porque en aquel entonces sólo se podía votar por el somocismo o el zancudismo.
No tienen razón los obispos de Nicaragua cuando dicen que es una obligación moral de todo ciudadano el votar en estas elecciones -que no son unas elecciones democráticas sino impuestas por un pacto-. ¿Qué clase de aberración es ésta, que estemos obligados a votar por candidatos que no queremos, puesto que el pueblo no ha tenido la libertad de elegir candidatos?
