My Frisian friend has spent most of his adult life in Japan. He speaks near-native English, of course, like many Frisians. Like most of the world, he follows events in the United States. He has not spent much time here, however, and he does not understand everything that happens. Sometimes he asks me questions.
Now he has e-mailed saying, “Do Christians in your country attend school? I am confused. They appear not to understand the theory of evolution, to which they refer, furthermore, as ‘Darwinism.'”
I replied that they are in fact not required to study the theory of evolution in school, that many reject it, and that it is indeed often conflated with ‘Darwinism.’ I think he was on the one hand glad to hear that his powers of perception were acute, but on the other, horrified to receive confirmation that his tenebrous perceptions were correct.
