I am overjoyed to find that the investigative journalist Tasneem Khalil, an excellent writer and a very brave person who also honors this blog with his friendship, has resurfaced alive and well. He was arrested May 11 and we had heard little since. I thought he was in jail or dead. But he was in hiding, and now he is in another country (I do not know which, and I am not bluffing) with his wife and child.
While Tasneem was in custody his e-mail and blog passwords were taken from him. False postings were made with them before he could regain control of his accounts. He was also forced to sign false confessions, and make videos confessing falsely to treasonous acts. Human Rights Watch wrote on 1 August to the Chief Advisor, Government of Bangladesh:
Axé, Tasneem. Everyone please support Human Rights Watch which was instrumental in his release.
Axé.
