Cibeles

My favorite ancient deity is the Anatolian creator goddess Kybele. She is also said to have been the spouse of the Titan Chronos and progenitress of the Olympian gods. Her celebrants are the Korybantes. Her crown has the form of a wall, and she is accompanied by lions. Here is Kybele in her fountain in Madrid, which is also my favorite statue:

Cibeles

Who is your favorite ancient deity?

Axé.

  1. What an interesting question!
Mine is Pele, deity of the Hawaiian volcanoes. I can imagine Hawaiians creating her out of the nature around them: Kilauea crater is home of this eruptive personality; they saw her face and form in the fountains of magma and smoke and steam coming from Kilauea. Long fine glass-like threads of lava were “Pele’s hair” and bead-like pebbles of lava were “Pele’s tears.” She was at war with the god of the sea, Kanaloa, and Ican watch the battle as lava flows over benches and beaches into the sea, where mighty explosions occur between the two gods.
Or at least that’s my interpretation. I’m sure I’m an animist and polytheist at heart.

  2. Thank you for your help from before!

I sent my applications for student teaching jobs in today. I applied for almost everything I saw, as it seems unlikely that I couldn’t tutor for any subject that I had done some research into.

  3. Oh –and of course Horus is my favourite god of the moment, although I believe he really had some close run-ins with Set. There were a lot of homosexual tendencies in Ancient Egypt — not limited to non god entities.
