Alcools (1912)

A la fin tu es las de ce monde ancien
Bergère ô tour Eiffel le troupeau des ponts bêle ce matin
Tu en as assez de vivre dans l’antiquité grecque et romaine

[Apollinaire]

It is the weekend, and I am singing that I shall not visit Greek or Roman antiquities but Caddo ones. Later I will visit my own Mayan origins. My friend writes:

“From Mexico City it’s several days to Cancuen–you’d need to go via ADO to Villahermosa (although I’d recommend stopping over in Xalapa since it rocks), then transfer to Palenque (spend the night, visit some sites, and get on the road early the day you want to go across the border!), and from there get a micro or taxi to Frontera Corazal. You can stamp out of Mexico there and rent a boat to go upriver to Bethel on the Guatemalan side, stamp into the country, and wait for a bus to go 4 hours down bumpy dirt road to Santa Elena (spend the night in Flores! It’s a beautiful island with colonial architecture and a lot of great restaurants and hotels). From Santa Elena, it’s only a 3 hour microbus ride to Raxruha, from where it’s a 30 minute taxi ride to go to La Unión in order to rent a boat to go the 20 minutes down river to Cancuen.”

Now that is exactly the kind of trip I like.

Axé.
