The Independent World Report

It is the weekend, so we are singing, but I am not putting on music of my own because I have so much work to do. There is music in the town, and on WWOZ.

Our friend Tasneem Khalil has launched a bimonthly human rights focused world news magazine, and you should subscribe to the print edition.

Tasneem is a good journalist and designer. I met him because I was looking for elegant white background layouts for blogs. I found his by chance, and we became friends. His site is a little different now due to his changed situation, but the IWR site is reminiscent of his old blog site.

At the time we met, Tasneem still lived in Bangladesh and posted to his blog often. When he stopped posting I knew he must have been arrested and was not sure whom to call. He did not reappear for a long while and I thought he was dead.

Then his wife e-mailed to say they were now safe. It was then revealed they had moved to Sweden. Now they have a second child and he has a magazine without advertising. So you should read it and subscribe to the print edition, it will be fun.

I am at work, as we know. I have given up fantasizing about cultural events I could attend, kayak trips I could go on, and salt water lap pools I could have dug in my yard for when I get home. (These would be inlaid with Moroccan tiles, and they might have jacuzzis.) I am fantasizing about mere manicures, pedicures, and facials. I am frivolous.

I fantasize about these things because I need, and cannot afford the money/time to:

+ repair rotted wood in house
+ finish painting exterior of house
+ replace beaded board in bathroom ceiling
+ repaint bathroom and hall
+ replace worn out floors in kitchen, laundry room, and sun room
+ redo grouting in kitchen
+ redo caulking in bathroom
+ repair and reseal deck
+ replace shed steps
+ replace front door.

Those are the things constituting necessary maintenance. Things I would like to do to the house include:

+ shades, shutters, screens
+ fence
+ garden improvement.

Once again, you can see that I am not at all alternative, but rather a member of the struggling middle class and a great bourgeoise. I must become more virtuous and ethereal.

Axé.
