  1. I just finished reading *Dancing to the Precipice* by Caroline Moorehead, historical biography of Lucie Dillon (Lucie de la Tour du Pin), a woman who never lost heart. She was amazing.
Like most Americans, I am pig ignorant about Latin America, so naturally I have never heard of Mercedes Soza.

  2. Worldwide, there are so many really interesting figures to know. Actually, this is quite heartening.

Sosa: big deal leftie folk singer, part of new song movement, exiled from Argentina by the junta, etc. If you recognize any of these names: Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Quilapayun, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Silvio Rodriguez (and more) you sort of get the idea. Also she sings on MISA CRIOLLA, famous composition and album of the late 60s/early 70s.

Here’s the famous Gloria from it. The thing is that with Vatican II and the end of Latin only Mass, you could get creative with it and express cultural identity and so on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWAhM8viw60
