Some Sophistry, Mildly Parodic Version

1. Three white Europeans allege that no American of any color should study race in Brazil due to our propensity to impose African-American agendas on weaker Afro-Brazilians. They do believe they have the authority to speak for Afro-Brazilians, and they are sure that Afro-Brazilians who collaborate with African-Americans have not chosen this activity freely.

2. One white European, the Supreme Court of the United States, and several Brazilians of various shades allege that to make race a factor in school admissions for affirmative action purposes is tantamount to “[forcing people] to live under a state-mandated racial label” (Justice Anthony Kennedy). How is this sophistry? Well, because the issue is defining race for purposes of school admissions only, and this is being done for purposes of affirmative action (a form of reparation for slavery and Jim Crow). It’s not part of an apartheid-style project. I would say the real issue is whether you believe in affirmative action and reparations or not, and whether, if you are white, you can accept relinquishing some privilege. Am I missing something?

3. The Sons of Italy, a fraternal order and lodge, sponsor college scholarships for Americans of Italian descent. For purposes of establishing eligibility, it requires applicants to have at least one Italian (living in Italy) or Italian-American (immigrant from Italy) parent or grandparent. Do you think that forces a label on people?

Axé.
