This is Little Jimmy Rushing, going to Chicago.
This is Joe Williams. A “monkey woman” is a woman with a monkey on her back.
Some white guys did a good rock version of this song, and Ernestine Anderson has a cool version of it.
Axé. I know you can feel my New Orleans vibe across these wires. Here is Williams with Basie in 1981.
Williams is not leaving Jackson or Memphis but New York for Chicago. His reason is not to find work but to escape those uppity New York women. Chicago women will defer to him as he deserves, says he.
Axé.
And the one who is going to Chicago is me, not some Godforsaken man. I hope this post helps to elucidate what it is to have a truly masculinist education.
I can’t tell if you mean your comment metaphorically. If literally, are you interested in a Chicago meet-up?
I mean it in rebellion against (a) all these Cajun and other South Louisiana men, who have this entitlement thing going on, and (b) my anti Chicago, anti Midwest interlocutors. I like the place and I lose patience with the SF/NY snobbery about it (and about Houston / Los Angeles / Miami, too, I think there is a lot to be said for all of these places). The background to the whole post is disgust at the French defense of Dominique Strauss-Kahn … justifications that so resemble those made by these post-Frenchmen here that it is somewhat chilling. So I unfortunately have no plans to Chicago at this time, but when I do go, I would love to meet up. And I should get myself organized, there are library fellowships to be had at the U of I, before I got off track my idea was to get these and spend exotic summers up there.
