Am I the only one who has a hard time watching Berlin Alexanderplatz — so interesting, but so scary, rough, and sad — and would rather read the book? Watching the film is very good for my German, but I really want to look away.
Key words and resources: Ernest Pawel on Döblin, NYT 1983; course on Berlin at Stanford: Döblin practiced psychiatry in Alexanderplatz; here is most of the book, and I can tell I would like it. Of course, I would like it best in German.
