Rigoberta Menchú famously said that her story was “not sad, because true” and although it has been alleged that what she says is not true, which is another matter, I say research is not difficult, for Menchú’s reason: it is true.
Research is not difficult; to the contrary, it facilitates everything. It means you are informed, so you can think more quickly and decide more easily what to do. It also adds, and does not subtract matter and energy to the world, so to speak, whereas other activities if not supported by research and new thoughts in general become repetitive and deplete energy, as you give out and give out and do not receive, so that what you have grows thin.
Research, furthermore, must be written up not only because that spreads knowledge, but also because writing organizes it and pushes it further. No, you cannot fit everything you know into the present document, but yes, that means you have already begun your next project.
Research, that is to say learning, is also the essential part of college, in that it improves life in indirect ways and not only in terms of earning potential. I do actually laud my students who want to go to college “to make more money” – making more money is great and I wish I did – but there are there are many examples of people who were otherwise enriched by college.
With research and writing, energy and life flow through you and perhaps that is why people discourage them. Either they are against that happening to anyone, as I suspect the current governor of my fair state is, or they want to keep it secret, to be the only ones to have it.
