I am an elitist, I just figured it out. My student says the reason the other TAs snipe at each other and lord it over their students is that they were not part of the cool kids earlier on in school and they are taking their revenge now. He was cool in school, says my TA, and doesn’t have the same kind of resentment against the cool undergraduates as his co-TAs do.
I listened to this theory and took it under advisement, realizing I have something similar going on. We hire someone every year and each new one, each year, complains because I, although I technically (according to them) “should” be available because I am not married, don’t hang out with them enough. The thing is that they are perfectly good at their jobs but they are just not cool.
