My shoe posts notwithstanding I actually have only about five pairs of shoes — I just investigate them to know what to aim. I recommend Swedish Hasbeens although we cannot afford them; especially the Danish boot and the Zip It Emy. You can also get the Danish boot at the Balisi site, which has in addition has brilliant shoes from El naturalista.

What I really want, though, are my journal subscriptions and my memberships in professional societies. Then I want to service the car and detail it. After that I want glasses for driving, and a manicure. I want to repair rot in a windowsill, and to refinish the deck and the front door against weather damage. I would like to grow the garden but I will never have time.

I truly need exterior paint and to refelt half the roof. I have already classified going to the MLA and LASA, professional activities like that, as goals that are no longer attainable. I would like to begin aspiring to these again, but we need raises.

At least we need support for our professional expenses. We stopped getting raises, library books, and contributions to professional travel in 2008. Do you still receive any of these things?

Advice to new faculty: start saving as much money as you can right away. You will be encouraged  to wait until after tenure, to make sure you have all the professional equipment and opportunities you need now. What you should actually start working on immediately is your cash reserves.

Axé.
