Public Opinion Poll

Did you drink a lot in your twenties? I did not — did not in my teens either — did not know it was expected.

I always did go out, though, and I started going out more and more in my thirties, living in New Orleans. I would go out by myself because nobody I knew would go with me, and I wanted to hear these immortal bands. I would get a tiny table like the old men, order soda water, tip a lot and close my face so as not to be approached.

My Reeducator thought I must be drinking and picking up men. He could not understand the interest of the music or trust my ability to park and walk on a dark street. (This conversation took place before New Orleans was the sanitized version of itself it has become now.)

I never understood what people mean when they talk about «growing up and not going out any more.»  I had thought they meant they believed music was only for the young, but I now see they never did go out for the music. That is what it is.

Did you drink a lot in your twenties? Do you still go out? What do you go to?

Axé.
