Superama

The nearest supermarket to my house in 06500 México, D.F. is owned by Wal*Mart but I tried it anyway, as there is nothing else within walking distance. With all the U.S. products it has, you can see it is a U.S. place, but it is much more upscale than Wal*Mart.

Minimum wage in Mexico is about 60 pesos for an 8 or 9 hour day. That is under $5. At this supermarket I spent 447 pesos, which is about $32, and tipped the bagger 8 pesos, as baggers are not paid. It seemed to me that at the prices they were charging they could afford to pay the baggers.

For $32 here is what I bought.

1 liter dish detergent Savia
1 trapo de piso hecho en México
4 apples Fuji, Washington State
250 milliliters John Frieda conditioner
100 Melitta coffee filters (could not get another brand or a smaller box)
500 grams Gamesa whole wheat crackers
25 Twinings tea bags Indian Chai
500 grams dark roast coffee Los Portales de Córdoba
430 grams Vita Real honey
1.5 liters spring water Sta. María (from Mexico I think, but this is a Nestlé brand)

I think it is a rather colonized list. I also know I went for fancier brands than I had to but I still think these prices were high. It is also interesting to note that it would take 7.5 full work days at minimum wage to buy these things at this store.

Axé.
