It appears that the Colombian aide the apparent Mexican President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto has engaged to help with the drug war, has a brother who did time in Germany for cocaine trafficking. I told you, this was the narco-candidate and he may be the narco-President.
Now the governments and drug lords can cooperate even better while using the drug war to justify the repression of social movements while also satisfying the United States’ triple desire: to keep up appearances, to sell more arms, and to encourage the expansion of authoritarian states and state practices in the region.
My student says the violence is worse in Colombia but news of it is suppressed; this is the purpose of having a Colombian drug war aide, says he. Peña Nieto controls Televisa and TV Azteca, so he can create the appearance of success in the drug war, and even of an improved human rights situation.
Now Mexico will “Colombianize,” says my student: things will not change or will get worse, but people will learn to see the degree of daily violence as normal while the media downplay it, such that it slips from critical consciousness and view.
