This is a response to Undine’s post — which is quite thought provoking and thus, good — and yes, I do respond to that scene from Casablanca but in the end, I do not trust any form of patriotism or nationalism because I am American and we know patriotism means bombs bursting in air.
This holiday followed close on the heels of that disappointing Mexican election, and my introduction to it via the U.S. military was unpleasant, so I am feeling very serious.
Here is Greenwald last year on the erosion of core liberties under the current administration; more has happened since and, apart from the fireworks I can hear in my neighborhood, real bombs are bursting right now.
