Today so far —
8:45 wake up, late!
9:15 leave house, car does not start; run to school!
9:40 arrive at school, grade!
10:20 teach!
12:30 go to put things on reserve!
12:55 run home!
1:30 cook and eat lunch, wash dishes, clear up!
2:30 meet with new house cleaner!
3:00 check e-mail and update course websites; order bicycle in honor of car’s 10th birthday — it may start having trouble now!
4:00 car now starts, weakly; go to have battery cleaned and charged; celebrate by going to have car washed inside and out; go to bank and grocery store!
7:00 cook and eat dinner, look at Facebook and blogs!
8:30 to-do list: more updating of course websites; go through 6 weeks of phone messages; make 3 phone calls; decide about weekend; grade; research; paper correspondence, update memberships in professional societies, work out!
But, I am tired. It may be that all I do is update course websites. I am teaching one course that meets 11 hours a week; this and the house seem to be quite enough to work on. Which of the other activities on the 8:30 to-do list above would most enrich the day? Research.
How much time have I spent on that class today? 220 minutes. How much more time do I plan to spend on it? 20 minutes, if I leave grading until dawn. That would be only 4 hours of paid work today, by someone who bought a bicycle and engaged a house cleaner, and is also considering buying sheets. I am not on an opulent budget, but I am a great bourgeoise.
UPDATE: What I really did: update course websites, and look for more course materials, now and for Fall; I spent another 2 hours on this beyond the 20 minutes, so I worked for 6 hours and it was all on teaching.
