As we know, the emotional pain I suffer is largely due to the sometimes real, but also perceived imperative to be someone other than who I am, and moreover to enjoy that, in order to survive (or get paid). Not merely pretend to be someone else or pretend to enjoy it, but to actually transform and actually enjoy.
I gave up one aspect of Reeducation on the theory that having a weblog would serve me better, and this has proven to be true. Still, with the degree to which I have expressed concern about double binds in real life, and despite the fact that I have not read Girard but only listened to lucid descriptions of his work, it is surprising to me that I was never pointed to the work of Bateson and that I missed him myself for these purposes, despite knowing the name.
But Bateson had in fact amply studied a series of frustrations I have described at length. I am fascinated now.
