I am still grading for the language classes, so I am still looking for French children’s songs. This is because the first foreign language I learned formally was French, and I did not suffer and feel resentment as the Spanish students do, but found it amusing. Even now, I find French to be an instant mood elevator, because I associate it with pleasant pedagogical environments where people say things in funny ways.
I have learned that one song I always thought was medieval is really early 18th century, and that “Auprès de ma blonde” was created for the Franco-Dutch war around the same time. Here is the most eccentric thing I have found: Canadians dressed as Napoleon’s soldiers, camping out in frozen Canada to commemorate the Battle of the Berezina, whose bicentennial was last week.
