I feel like the Colonel, watching it rain in Macondo. We have “heavy rain mist” in Maringouin and 34 degrees F; it has been like this for many days and will not be clear until Thursday.

Barthes was an unrelenting opponent of French imperialism, and the strongest essay in the book, “African Grammar,” exposes the colonialist rhetoric that is embedded in the popular press under the guise of journalistic objectivity. Yet this alone would not have made the book a classic.
