Here is an anti-Terry Caesar manifesto. I remember enjoying the article upon which his anti-academic books are based and thinking it would be good for people to read before going on the job market. They could also read our friend Ms. Mentor for another view. But Ms. Mentor liked his book, and I have just looked at his footnotes and thought, this person is bright and well read and should put more of his energy into academic rather than meta-academic writing. Perhaps one dose of Terry Caesar is the right dose.
I was led to think about Terry Caesar by the academic jobs wiki, which I had never looked at before and which is beyond toxic, especially the “talk” page. What I did not like about being new faculty was having to listen to discussions like this. So if I ever write my own advice book I am going to advise against it. I was on the wiki to find out whether we have been trashed as promised, and we have not (but Delaware has). The candidate did not think I would know about the wiki or be able to access it, so when he said he would make it impossible for us to hire he thought he was scaring me.
