Work tracking summary in a bad week

Day 1 – 9 hours TEACHING
Day 2 – 3 hours TEACHING, 4 hours SERVICE
Day 3 – 9 hours TEACHING
Day 4 – 2 hours SERVICE, .5 hours RESEARCH
Day 5 .5 hours RESEARCH
Day 6 – 2 hours RESEARCH
Day 7 – 5 hours TEACHING, 1 hour RESEARCH

Total TEACHING: 26 hours … I am surprised it was not more, but this is good given all I got done, very efficient.
Total SERVICE: 6 hours … I am glad it was not more. It was not efficient but most of it was pleasant and instructive, and I do not have to do so much every week.
Total RESEARCH: 4 hours … no wonder I feel my projects need more time even though now I at least touch them without fear, which is progress.
Total TIME: There is another hour of research in there because I did touch it on those non research days, so I am saying it was a 37 hour week, or less if you discount some conversation time strategizing and building good will.

Where did the rest of the time go? To fifteen hours of intense business writing and deep reflection. Exactly the fifteen hours I needed for more research and writing, and also more exercise and fresh air.

The job then is to reconquer those fifteen hours. I am in the habit of donating them: it started with Reeducation, which wanted them, and I have used them at various times for other things like massive program building and grant making. This means my memory of the 50 hour week, 55 if you count socializing that is pleasant but that you are doing in the interest of relationship building, is real. But right now it is not work reduction I need, it is work step-up, and the place to get the time is from the time I spend vacillating about whether or not I am a rational being and authorized to do work, basically.

Axé.
