For the rain there is nothing like huaynos. If I were to be in Mexico City this summer, which I now apparently am not, I would go Sunday mornings to the market in Santa María la Ribera. I would have herbs and shrimp and wine and blast charango music through the courtyard while cooking, impressing the passers-by.
After that I would encase myself in rain gear and go to a bookstore or a tianguis and observe. Here are the theatre listings for Mexico City, any night.
Have you read David Lida’s book? Or his other two? I had put First Stop in the New World as pre-reading for the Mexico City program without reading it, and now I am reading it. It is entertaining and not untrue. Do you think it would put students off, though — is the panorama as drawn too extreme? Is it better as post-reading?
