“That is from Spain, so it is by the oppressor, so it does not interest me and I should not have to read it.”
“All you ever teach is literary analysis” (meaning that in language and culture classes, film and history classes, I also expect serious reading).
“Spain in 1812 was trying to free itself from England and the monarchy. They must have been, because a constitution was written, and that is what constitutions do” (said by a citizen of a South American country).
Some days I really favor a test to get into the major. Only people able to think somewhat conceptually would be allowed in.
