Here is the ponencia colectiva Arturo Serrano Plaja read at a momentuous 1937 congress, that Vallejo attended. It is a very interesting document, an incredibly interesting document, but I was looking for things by Arturo because I remember a poem of his that went something like this:
España está hispanizada
¿Quién la deshispanizará?
El deshispanizador que la deshispanice
Gran deshispanizador será.
I was thinking about this today because I made the final examination for my Spanish literature class oral. Students were given topics or issues a week ahead and had that time to prepare a presentation for the class. They had different, but interrelated topics. It was interesting to watch this panel.
Was Spain too Spanish, or not Spanish enough? was the question the students had decided the authors were obsessed with. As the presentations continued, each one riffing off the other and looking for a new take on this question, I thought of this poem heard long ago and began to understand its humors and ironies.
