Con la Revolución Francesa se introduce la idea de que la barbarie se halla también en el interior del continente (22). A partir de allí, el rol de la burguesía es controlar la revolución: que no sea demasiado extrema, pero que sí permita cierto tipo de modernización; la burguesía ahora tiene que civilizar al pueblo. En este contexto, además, la función del pueblo es legitimar la república y su poder.

There is something in this that fits with all the other evidence for my current papers: the need for an Other within, that legitimates the state.
