Sobre la ironía

“Don’t be a professor, because it will not be about creating nice lower-division Spanish classes,” I was always told. “I know,” I always said, “that is why I am going on to the Ph.D.” But in my real life, being a professor is largely about doing that, and in poor situations por más señas.

The weekend was nice, really nice, because of interfacing with the thoughts and atmospheres of people who spend more time thinking about other things, and I am in culture shock now. The problem of having good experiences is getting caught in the grip of nostalgia and longing.

This week’s mantra: that is my real life, not this. That is where to look, what to consider oneself a part of, what to keep uppermost in consciousness.
