What happens when higher education becomes a mass commodity? What is the role of the liberal arts in institutions that are basically trade schools? Are these studies important in themselves, or do they exist within the academy to give a gloss of prestige to the business of pumping out college graduates?
These thoughts are based on the book I just finished, Marc McGurl’s The Program Era.
I highly recommend it and even think it’s the best book I have ever read. I do not exaggerate. The dry title belies the power of this long, long book, which swept me right along to the end and left me wanting more.
I should read it. http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674033191 I will go to New Orleans and San Francisco and stand in bookstores. And maybe Houston.
Do read it, but don’t believe the blurb.
Aha, I wondered about that. Good tip! 🙂
