A friend writes, out of the blue:
When you were younger you maybe didn’t need to adjust to being in the 99th+ percentile of IQ because you had genuine peers around you who were also smart. It’s tougher now because you don’t have the same access to smart people that you used to have. I sense this is an issue for you. You have my sincere sympathy. I am not kidding here.
I have been having this experience ever since I became faculty, and trying to fit in with the other faculty, to become someone faculty does not envy or fear, has been bad for my work. I did not have this problem in school although my dissertation director said my preference for courses with people who were better informed or smarter than I was, was “arrogant” (I never understood why it would be that).
