A book I used used long ago in Spanish 202 is now being used in Spanish 431. It could mean that the quality of our language program has decreased sharply, or that this faculty member is not very demanding. It explains why the students found my Spanish 432 so difficult last year, though.
What book or books would you use in a senior level survey of medieval and early modern Spanish literature?
When I took junior level medieval we had Deyermond’s history of the literatures of the period and we read among other things the Cid and the Celestina in their entirety, albeit in bilingual (older and modernized Spanish) editions.
We read Lope, Tirso and Calderón as sophomores in non-modernized versions, and Cervantes’ short novels, too.
But here, if I taught Spanish 431, I might use an anthology that I would supplement, but it would be something like Sanchez-Romeraldo and Ibarra, Antología de autores españoles: antiguos y modernos, not something simplified and abridged.
What do you teach?
