It was the evenness that they did not like, that seemed like an affront. They believed in suffering and relief.
(I always feel I must go somewhere I feel I cannot be found if I want to enact that apparently criminal evenness.)
(If I am visible then I must be seen to suffer because if not, worse will be visited upon me.)
But I wonder whether in this place, too, as well as the places I find more friendly, I might also refuse to suffer.
(What I mean by that, most specifically: not allow torturing people to go ahead, on the theory that they are less privileged and need to do this.)
