The “University of DYI”

This is a new inside joke that I won’t explain here, but it is the most therapeutic thing I have heard in a long time, perhaps ever. Or it is in the top five.

Notes on things:

  • We are supposed to tell the graduate school what committees we would like to be on, and I did not do this. I still should.
  • We need the combined B.A./M.A. program in Spanish (B.A. + 1) as well as in French, and we should advocate for it. Especially with LSU potentially losing the M.A.
  • I really need to apply for promotion so that I can then apply for things available only to that rank.
  • Three of our Ph.D. candidates committed suicide last year.

In other news, I went to a training, which wasn’t entirely terrible as a review session. To fight negativity you must get:

  • A daily writing practice
  • A weekly planning meeting
  • A community of support and accountability, and particularly someone to help you read rejection letters and so on, so that you can get more objective about what they actually say.

Also, on harassers, you are supposed to stop giving them your power, not internalize. (That is only a partial response, of course, and it presupposes a better institutional culture than I have, but it is not incorrect.)

Axé.
