What you need is discipline, structure, and freedom.

What we have is oppression, disorganization, and stricture.

This is very, very important. It is what I got from Reeducation. Everyone has always said I was too scientific and organized, but actually I am quite laid-back. They also thought I was too focused. But look. And by discipline I do not mean oversight, or drudgery. In the second triad, work DOES become drudgery.

My general illumination on this is that academic advice is not the same as scholarly advice. Scholarly advice encourages and grows voice, and whereas academic advice, while it has its place, can squelch voice. Metrics lead to the overuse of academic advice, and even its substitution for scholarly advice. From there, we get academic advice on questions of lifestyle, how to have a writing “discipline,” and so on.

––I’ve always known how to have a writing discipline but never given myself enough space-time to contemplate scholarly, as opposed to academic advice. This is very interesting.

Axé.
