Big Joe Williams

When I started this Blues Carnival yesterday, I did not realize how much  archival blues footage there was available.  I had only searched for a few artists when Colorado Bob sent a link to Big Joe Williams on his very own Baby, Please Don’t Go.  It is an excellent suggestion and I hasten to point to some additional Big Joe Williams footage.  Listen to that guitar work.  Look how amazingly he played, even when he was quite old.

It was Big Joe Williams I first heard sing my very favorite blues lyrics:

Can’t read, can’t write, gonna buy me a telephone
Can’t read, can’t write, gonna buy me a telephone
Gonna talk to my baby and tell her to please come home

and

Baby you so beautiful but you gotta die one day
Baby you so beautiful but you gotta die one day
All I want’s some good loving before you pass away.

Axé.

  1. I love the music that you’ve posted recently. I tried to comment on Sonny Boy, but there were technical problems. Hello and Happy New Year to you.

  2. Do you know what the stringy looking things on the front of his guitar were? They didn’t look like guitar strings; they looked more like twine.

  3. 🙂 Re those strings – on the mule song, they sort of look like a wire (is that guitar wired for sound with a contact mike?) although they could be just long ends of bass strings. I can’t figure it out – is anyone savvier than I am on this?
