Indians!

People post about serious things, but forget to watch the Mardi Gras Indians, who are far more interesting. The excellent, classic film on Mardi Gras Indians is, as I have said before, Always for Pleasure. The classic album to own is The Wild Tchoupitoulas. These are only the starting points. To find the Indians, you must wander the streets. And it is the weekend, so we will sing.

Mardi Gras morning won’t be long
Gonna play Indians and carry on
Chokimo feena, ela hey
Indians are rulers on the holiday!

I hope it warms up for Mardi Gras, or at least that the sun comes out. The only spot of real heat and activity I have seen today is the Creole soul food place, where customers are arguing about the composition of their plate lunches. Put the fish on top of the rice, and the étouffée on top of that! Corn and okra, yes!

Axé.

  1. wow – beautiful — and it’s nice to view mardi gras from the people’s point of view and not mass media…thanks for sharing!

  2. You know, for me, it’s the days leading up to Mardi Gras that are the best. I wonder how many people outside of the city know that Mardi Gras is just the culmination of the Carnival season. If you wait until Mardi Gras to start celebrating, you’ve missed most of the activity!

By the way, I just LOVE the flag boys. They are simply magnificent!
