Return of the Nice White Lady

“This article criticizes the writings of a person of color. In particular, it identifies and criticizes several forms of racism in the writer’s work. As a Euro-American, cannot condone any criticism of any aspect of any work by any person of color, for any reason. It is not for me to say so if that work is participating in an oppressive discourse. I am therefore unable to evaluate the article.”

The Nice White Lady believes she is being circumspect on race, but I think she is copping out.

Axé.

  1. Yeah,

That is really kind of childish. Her delusional self-importance is really just self-centeredness. And what she deems to be a political statement against a discourse actually just shuts it down.

And that is me using polite language. I just turned off Fox news, I think after this Scooter Libby trial, there will be a domino effect concerning how debates are run in this country.

  2. Are you talking about Ann Coulter? If so this post really is turning out to be as allegorical as intended.

It was inspired by an anonymous manuscript reviewer whose attitude I decided was exemplary of many academics.

It coincided with all of those bloggers castigating ChasingMoksha for being white and saying something about race other than “Oh dear, I’m white, I’m white, I have white privilege, and I cannot say one more thing beyond that because it is impossible for persons like me ever to become conscious enough to have a non-racist thought, I know, I know, I have white privilege.”

And now it applies to Coulter or – ?

    C’est excellent! 🙂

  3. “Oh dear, I’m white, I’m white, I have white privilege, and I cannot say one more thing beyond that because it is impossible for persons like me ever to become conscious enough to have a non-racist thought, I know, I know, I have white privilege.”

    That sums it up.

  4. Yes – I wonder what those people would do if I told them I get on the cases of people of various races about racism every day?

I do – to defend my honor and that of my research field. People think Spanish is easy to learn and that it could not be a language of intellectuals, because Mexicans speak it, and everyone knows they are not bright. I have students say this to me in class regularly – why did I get a C, this is supposed to be an easy language, if those Mexicans can speak it, I should be able to.

Some of the students who say this are white, but many are not. I get on the case of the person who says it no matter what color they are. It is my understanding that these bloggers would disapprove of my getting after any but the white ones.

If that is the best these bloggers can do for antiracism, I am neither impressed nor interested.
