Night Commuters

In underreported news:

1. There is a complicated civil war taking place in northern Uganda. Children at risk of being pressed into unpleasant service by the Lord’s Resistance Army (see also this piece , and this one) have to hide at night, and are thus known as “night commuters.” There were peace talks and hopes of ending the war late last year, but at this point the process appears to be stalled.

Some California students have made a film on the situation, and they are on tour with it as we speak. We can see part of the film on Google Video. This video is also related to the film project, and there are further videos on the matter floating through cyberspace.

2. I am tightening my troll policy. I do regularly get comments I do not publish, comments further beyond the pale even than some of those I do publish. I hereby raise the standard of unpublishability.

2.1. I regret to have to point out to literate adults that being off topic and having arrived for the purpose of heckling is not disagreement or discussion. It is trolling.

2.2. Disagreement with something I say or quote, or even a somewhat unfortunate manner of expressing such disagreement, does not constitute trolling.

2.3. Grandstanding with a disgreement, or attempting to hijack a discussion thread to a tangent, does constitute trolling.

2.4. If it is merely your tone I do not like, I will continue to point that out. But if you have something concrete and on point to say, I will still publish you, regardless of tone.

2.5. Of course, those who were already deleted and spammed, will continue to be.

2.6. I am tempted to propose a bargain. If you talk in a civilized manner, we will not only know you are intelligent. We will also consider you sexy. Exhibit trollish behavior and…well, what are we to think of how you must be in real life?

2.7. Further details can be found on my Talk page.

3. Meanwhile, this Ugandan music video offers a good song by Henry Tigan and a very realistic representation of a non-First World bus ride. I like it quite a lot.

Axé.

  1. I am sorry to learn that you have been plagued by “bad commenting behavior”! I think you are doing the right thing by moderating the comments. This space you created is thought-provoking and, for me at least, often very touching: it is worth preserving. Thank you.

  2. Thanks to all 3 – and everyone, read the Black Electorate article Joanna found, it is excellent!

(Yes, the Zapata King’s site is loony, but also pathetic. I’ve got a troll or two worse than him.)

  3. I want to say thank you for caring. I have been praying my heart out for these children over in Uganda. I plan to help out over there as much as i can in a couple of years. My heart has been reaching out to them and i don’t know what else to do besides pray. It is just awesome to see that other people care just as much…i came to this website while searching night commuters…i am doing a paper on it.
    Thank you guys
